Vegetable Tanned Leather

Breathing new life into animal hides

Tannins are key to the vegetable tanning process. They breathe new life into animal hides – naturally. The unique, premium character of leather tanned in this way is the most genuine expression of the tannins we use. The perfectly proportioned mixture of tannins and the time taken for each process are part of the tanner's artistry.

The route to a unique style

We have always believed that a distinctive product is the perfect execution of an idea. Creating with sense is key to respect the peerless nature of each hide. Creating for the senses means transmitting the natural authenticity of the leather. This is the only way to create leather of a unique character that lasts and enhances with the course of time.

Our manifesto

We create leather that attracks you for its chromatic intensity, its elegancy and it’s wooden aromas, embracing you in its natural warmth, that’s the result of the vegetable tanning. Instant seduction with a single touch.

Preserving this sensory experience means creating for the senses.

Create with respect

Vegetable tanning

a sustainable process

Made in Barcelona

Combalia is one of the founders of the LCB Leather Clúster Barcelona, which is based in our home town of Igualada. The Leather Cluster is a cluster promoting collaboration in production and training, focusing on technological transformation, and committed to an innovative vision of the future. The tanneries involved work together, organizing to have an impact on the environment and the local area.

Vegetable tanning is a tanning process using plant-based products known as tannins. Tannins are obtained from the bark, the wood, the leaves and the fruit of the chestnut, the quebracho and the mimosa trees, among others. They are a natural source of the components necessary for tanning hides. This makes vegetable tanning the method of tanning with the least environmental impact.

A circular process

We treat our hides using vegetable tanning methods that are free from heavy metals. The production process is based on the principles of sustainability and circularity. The by-products of the various steps in the process become raw materials for other companies.

A natural by-product

Raw hides are a by-product of the agri-food sector. We are a key contributor to the appropriate management and reuse of this natural and versatile by-product. Tanneries are responsible for preventing some ten million tonnes of raw hides ending up in landfill each year.

Organic and compostable

Hides are of organic animal origin. When they are tanned with vegetable extracts they become what is known as “crust leather”. A compostable product.

Meeting standards

To be respectfull with the environment; that’s our aim. Year by year we keep investing in our installations and machinery, improving processes and procedures to reduce our environmental impact. Combalia complies with European standards to ensure the protection of human health, the conservation of animal and plant species, and the protection of the landscape and the architectural heritage of the local area. Combalia undergoes regular checks to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and quality criteria.

Every drop counts

The tanneries in the Cluster use centralized water treatment plants that are managed by competent agencies to ensure the correct treatment and purification of the water used.

The circular bioeconomy

Our craft is based on traditional craftsmanship, but we have incorporated the principles of the circular economy into what we do. The challenges posed by the sustainable development goals create new opportunities – by working together, we can improve our use of co-products and optimize our production structures by using technology, innovation, and more sustainable materials.

At Combalia, we are committed to preserving respect for natural elements in order to continue creating natural, authentic and noble leather.
